Hi Lee! Maybe you already know this, but it's a magnificent feeling to be quoted, and to inspire someone to write a poem. I'm thrilled that you like this particular line so much - it was a late addition to the essay and when I wrote it, I felt that nice click (you know, where you're really impressed with yourself and you feel like you really extracted exactly what you wanted out of the words)...but you never know how that will fly with other people. I like this part very much - and I know it might seem a little strange, but it's not so much because of specific words, but because of the structure, and the way it clouded up in my mind:

you rewind

the sidewalks

the crosswalks

the plaza

the staircase

the promenade

to the vendor’s cart

I don't know why, but that part made me saddest...of course only snuggled in with the rest of the poem. You really captured the sentiment of my idea.

Thanks for sharing with me. I'm staying tuned,
Karen

Grab life by the monkey bars! I like it.

And thanks for checking out the blog. The Playground series will continue after I get my Kickstarter publishing campaign going, probably next week.

Hope your work day gets more interesting! See you around.

Bored at work so I started reading your blog and I have to say I am thoroughly enjoying it. This series in particular moves me but Im not sure in which ways. I feel I either need to applaud your cynicism or take notes on this as an inspirational piece and grab life by the monkey bars!. Whichever way I lean by the end, take pleasure in knowing that I plan on continuing to read the series until I figure it out.

Also, my favorite quote so far:
" I am less Jupiter or Mars, more Earth than anything, full of warring tribes and chemical pollution, awash with great hopes and tired dread, ambition and reticence, in one turn of the Prime Meridian." (Dateline)
Very nice.

I have enjoyed the series with the idea of a captain and leader of a team. Obviously we all deal with a leader in the workplace, maybe we are the leader or captain. I am going to share this mini series with my coaching buddies at the school in case they would like to read it for enjoyment or use it as team and leadership building material.

Reread it dude. The speaker is sympathetic because he has an emotional response to witnessing the troubadour's frustration. And the closing lines renege on the philosophizing when the speaker realizes the guy just isn't playing because it's raining. The renege trivializes the soliloquy he makes about the gig being in the bag and the instrument being in the playing and pulls the reader back down to earth.

If I'm bullying anyone it's the guitar geek who's trying to up-sell gig bags to people with no gigs.

I remember 32 oz. Styrofoam cups littering the halls of church youth groups. Over-caffeinated youths, I shiver at the thought.
